Donna the Buffalo News & Rumors

February 2005

New Photos: Charlottesville, VA 2/17/05 Appropriately enough, Donna the Buffalo kicked off its Ville tour at the Starr Hill Music Hall in Charlottesville, VA, and Gail Vanderheyden was there with camera in hand. While Gail took plenty of "traditional" photos of the band's performance that night, like the one at right, by manipulating the camera she also captured some very funky images that I like even better. Thanks for allowing DonnaFans to host your images, Gail! (posted 2/28/05)

Jeb Debuts New Tune At End Of Ville Tour The encore of Donna the Buffalo's show on Friday 2/25 at the Variety Playhouse in Atlanta was a new Jeb Puryear song that Jeb performed by himself on electric guitar. He also played this song the next night in Richmond, VA as the first of a three-song encore to end the Ville tour. The title of this song has not been confirmed, but based on its lyrics it might be called Take Your Last Step. The Richmond show also featured a slightly different arrangement of Blue Sky. The band's next gig is March 9 in Kent, OH. (updated 2/27/05)

Just Added: Asheville Photos. Lots Of Em. Both Terry Killebrew and John Yust have contributed photos to DonnaFans.com before, and both generously gave me permission to post their photos (38 total!) from Donna's 2/19/05 gig at The Orange Peel in Asheville, NC. People have been talking about how great bassist Bill Reynolds' noticeably increased contributions on this tour have been, and Terry and John each captured some great images of Bill being Bill. Special Guest In Nashville: Jim Lauderdale Jim Lauderdale sat in with Donna the Buffalo for a good chunk of the show on Tuesday, 2/22/05 in Nashville. Jim came out about halfway through Donna's set to play Wait Till Spring, and stayed on for Life By Numbers, Ginger Peach, Slow Motion Trouble, The King of Broken Hearts, Halfway Down, You Don't Seem to Miss Me, and Wo Wo Wo. You'll find the complete set list at Donnabase.com. (posted 2/23/05)

New Photos: Winston-Salem 2/18/05 Less than a week after the show, Terry Killebrew's photos of Donna the Buffalo's 2/18/05 performance at Ziggy's in Winston-Salem, NC are already on Donnafans.com. Terry wisely chose to take multiple photos of the night's very special guest, former DtB keyboardist Joe Thrift. If you look carefully, you'll also be able to see that Terry captured images of the infamous "orbs" floating above the stage that have apparently been following the band since the Key West run. Both Terry and John Yust shot photos of the next night's show in Asheville, NC, and I will add those images to this site next. (posted 2/22/05)

Joe Thrift Joins Donna In Winston-Salem Former Donna the Buffalo keyboard player Joe Thrift sat in for several songs at the band's show at Ziggy's in Winston-Salem, NC on Friday, 2/18. Joe played rubboard on Tides of Time, I Don't Need A Riddle, Hey Trudy, and Zydeco>Give Me Just a Little Time, and played organ and sang on Seminole Wind. In addition, Ward Puryear joined in on rubboard for the Part Time Lover encore. You can get the complete setlist from Donnabase.com, and I'll post more photos from this show very soon. Two More Good Nights From November 2004 Jessica Little had a good time seeing Donna in November 2004, and has the photos to prove it. Here I present her images from two more of those shows: 11/19/04, Beachland Ballroom, Cleveland and 11/20/04, Forward Hall, Erie, PA, where Jeb played several songs on pedal steel. Thanks for allowing DonnaFans.com to host these photos, Jessica! (posted 2/18/05)

More Photos: Roll Out The Barrel In Hickory, NC Donna the Buffalo has played in Hickory, NC only once in its career, in the fall of 2004, and DonnaFan.com contributor Terry Killebrew was there. Check out his photos of the band's 10/9/04 performance at the Hickory Oktoberfest, where they were the headline act on Saturday night. Terry captured some really good images at this show, including a few great ones of Tara. Look for more of his photography from other shows on DonnaFans.com soon. (posted 2/16/05)

Ville Tour Starts Thursday 2/17 Donna the Buffalo's annual spring trek through the Southeast, which has come to be known as the Ville tour after the names of several of the cities it passes through, starts this Thursday in Charlottesville, VA. It includes stops in Winston-Salem, NC, Asheville, NC, Huntsville, AL, Nashville, TN, Birmingham, AL, Greenville, SC, Atlanta, GA, and Richmond, VA. Details for all of these shows, as well as more dates through March (get ready, Colorado!) are on the tour dates page of the band's official site, donnathebuffalo.com. And of course, your photos and reviews of any of these shows will make a mighty fine addition to DonnaFans.com; email 'em to fans@donnafans.com. (posted 2/13/05)

New Photos: Grand Time In Grand Rapids Jessica Little saw Donna a bunch of times in November 2004, and lucky for us she always brought her camera. Check out her photos of the band's 11/13/04 performance at The Intersection in Grand Rapids, MI. Jessica has generously shared many of her photos with me, and you'll soon be able to see more of her images from 11/04 and earlier on DonnaFans.com. (posted 2/13/05)

How Many Times Has Donna Played That Song? Dwight Holmes' Donna Song Base is now up on HaveYouHerd.com. This awesome document is a list of all songs known to have been played by Donna the Buffalo through December 17, 2004 and for each song includes the dates of the first and last time played, the number of times played, average number of times played per year, and more. You can view it right on the site, or download it as a Word or Excel file. Thank you, Dwight, for creating this valuable resource, and thanks Rand for making it available. (posted 2/7/05)

Rockin' Out in Raleigh Years from now, Donna the Buffalo's mid-January 2005 performances at the Lincoln Theater in Raleigh, NC will be looked back upon as yet another turning point in the band's history. With these gigs they proved in no uncertain terms that they were entering the post-Jim Miller era going full speed ahead and hitting on all cylinders. Terry Killebrew was on hand, and generously shares with Donnafans.com his photos from the 1/14/05 and 1/15/05 shows. (posted 2/4/05)

New Album Comes Out in March According to Funkyside.com, Donna the Buffalo's latest studio release, Life's A Ride, is "due out March 2005!" Yeah, yeah, I know, it's been coming out "soon" for quite a while now, but this time it's for real. Besides the title track, this CD is likely to include Blue Sky; which of the "new" Jeb tunes will be on there is anybody's guess. If you're really lucky you might be able to pick it up at one of the shows in the southeast late this month, or keep your eye on the recently (and very nicely) redesigned Funkyside.com and order it as soon as it's released. (updated 2/2/05)

Photos from Raleigh, Part 1 The first batch of Terry Killebrew's photos have been posted; they're from the 1/15/05 show at the Lincoln Theater in Raleigh, NC. This small batch of images will be followed by a much larger selection of Terry's photos from the previous night's show at the same venue. Thanks, Terry! (posted 2/1/05)
