Donna the Buffalo News & Rumors

September 2005

New Photos: Greensboro, NC 9/18/05 Like most us of, Terry Killebrew hits pretty much every Donna the Buffalo show in his home state, so when the band recently rolled into Greensboro for a gig at the historic Carolina Theatre, Terry was there with camera in hand. Check out his photos of Donna's 9/18/05 performance in Greensboro, which include several really nice ones of the full band he shot from the balcony. Thanks so much for your continued contributions to DonnaFans.com, Terry! (posted 9/27/05)

Donna Will Play Festival In Jamaica Donna the Buffalo will be playing at the Jamm in Jamaica 2006 festival in Negril, Jamaica. The festival will take place from 3/25/06 - 4/1/06 and will also include Railroad Earth, The Big Wu, Under Full Sail (featuring members of ekoostik hookah Dave Katz, Eric Lanese, Cliff Starbuck and Steve Sweney with John Mullins) and Vince Herman. For more details see www.jamminjamaica.com. (posted 9/24/05)

New Photos: Bristol, TN 9/16/05 As luck would have it, Donna the Buffalo's set at the Rhythm & Roots Reunion in Bristol, TN was scheduled for 9:30 p.m., immediately following, and on the same stage as, Jim Lauderdale's set. So the band joined Jim for his entire two-hour set, and then played their own set. The Herd's favorite film buff, Zan Buckner, was on hand and generously shares a few photos of the band's 9/16/05 performances, including several shots of Jim Lauderdale, and even one of Kathy Z sporting green hair (kinda). Thanks, Zan! (posted 9/22/05)

Flashback To Floyd Fest Brendon Layton continues to share his Donna the Buffalo photography with the Herd via DonnaFans.com, this time offering up a dozen terrific images of the band's performance on 7/30/05 at Floyd Fest in Floyd, VA. His photos include a series of shots of the always-photogenic Jim Lauderdale, who joined the band for seven songs in the middle of the set and then again for the first song of the encore. Thanks so much for your generous contributions to this site, Brendon! (posted 9/19/05)

DtB Interview In NC Newspaper On Thursday, September 15, GoTriad.com, the entertainment section of the Greensboro, NC News & Record, featured a better-than-average interview with Jeb, Tara, and former Donna the Buffalo keyboard player Joe Thrift. In the article, writer Jeri Rowe covers a lot of ground, from the band's early days recording The Purple One to the Shakori Fests to their gig at the Carolina Theatre in Greensboro on Sunday, 9/18, which most likely will have Thrift sitting in with the band for a few songs. Rowe also got this quote from Tara about the Herd: "We're not out to save the world, you know what I mean? We're socially conscious people, sensitive to our fellow man and woman and have a basically positive outlook toward mankind, and what we've seen in the people who follow us is that they relate to that." It'll Be A September To Remember Donna the Buffalo is about to embark on a tour for the rest of September that will have them playing nine shows in 10 days in seven states, mostly in the southeast. It kicks off this Friday, 9/16 in Bristol, TN, then moves to NC for performances in Charlotte and Greensboro. After a night off, they'll play on consective nights in Annapolis, MD; Norfolk, VA; Knoxville, TN (free show); Harrodsburg, KY; and West Auburn, AL before finally wrapping it up in a big way with an appearance at the Austin City Limits Festival in Austin, TX on Sunday, 9/25. Just Added: Photos From R&R In RI Donna the Buffalo spent the Saturday of Labor Day weekend at the Rhythm & Roots Festival in Ninigret, RI, playing both an afternoon and an evening set. The band first played this fest in 2000. First-time DonnaFans.com contributor Jay Fagan generously provides us with two dozen photos of the band's afternoon performance on 9/3/05, including a great series of shots of Jeb. Thanks, Jay! Dtb To Record Next CD In Asheville Studio According to Donna the Buffalo bass player Bill Reynold's blog on the A-Tone Music site, after the Shakori GrassRoots Festival, the band will be rehearsing songs for its next CD, which they plan to record in Asheville, NC in October. "Look for soulful delivery and new sounds," Bill writes. Bill's also going to be making his acting debut in a film that's going to be shot in Asheville. (posted 9/10/05)

New Photos: Sun Nite GrassRoots Guests One of the best parts of Donna the Buffalo's GrassRoots Festival in Trumansburg, NY each July is the band's Sunday night set, when the band invites all of their friends from the Ithaca music scene and beyond to join them onstage. Brendon Layton caught all of action from DtB's 7/24/05 set at GrassRoots, including guests John Specker, Jairo van Lunteren, Keith Frank, Dimitri Thomas, and Keith Secola. Thanks, Brendon, and this concludes our coverage of T-burg GrassRoots 2005! (posted 9/8/05)

DtB To Play Jamaica This Spring Call it more than a rumor but less than confirmed: Word has it that Donna the Buffalo will play a week of shows in Negril, Jamaica this spring. Tentative dates are March 26 through April 2, with performances taking place on a stage on the beach, in the cliffs, and/or at an all-day festival in a park, which obviously would include other bands. Look for more details here or on the official DtB as soon as the info is confirmed. (posted 9/6/05)

Just Added: Woodstock Review A mid-afternoon Donna the Buffalo set in a quaint outdoor venue relatively close to home always sounds like a good deal to me, and while some fans found fault with the band's 8/28/05 peformance at the Woodstock Playhouse in Woodstock, NY, I thoroughly enjoyed myself, especially hearing a new Tara song, a new Jeb song, and a rarely played song, It's Just Me. Check out my review of this show, and let me know what you thought of it: fans@donnafans.com. (posted 9/5/05)

R&R To Feature Two Sets Of Donna, Screening Of GrassRoots Documentary If you're a Donna the Buffalo fan, the Rhythm & Roots Festival in Ninigret, RI is the place to be this Saturday, 9/3. The band will play two sets on this day--one from 4:45 to 6:00 and a second from 7:30 to 9:30. Then the festival will feature a screening of Haw River Films' GrassRoots Stage documentary, which features music and interviews with Donna the Buffalo and many of the performers from the 2003 GrassRoots Festival.
