Donna the Buffalo News & Rumors

July 2005

A Well-Deserved Break After playing at two different festivals this weekend, Donna the Buffalo will be taking several weeks off before resuming their touring in mid-August. On Saturday, 7/30 they'll play an 8 p.m. set at Floydfest 4 in Floyd, VA and then will drive up to Mariaville, NY for a 2 p.m. set at Camp Creek on Sunday, 7/31. The party will start all over again on Friday, 8/19 with a free 7 p.m. show at Party in the Park at the Rochester Public Market in Rochester, NY. (posted 7/30/05)

GrassRoots Photos, Part Two Donna the Buffalo and country legend Jim Lauderdale have been making music together for many years now, and each year at the GrassRoots Festival in Trumansburg, NY, the two take advantage of the opportunity to perform an entire show together. Greg Cotterill shot some great photos of the band's set with Jim Lauderdale on the Grandstand Stage on Friday afternoon, 7/22/05, including a few of the band chatting with Jim backstage. Thanks, Greg! (posted 7/28/05)

Just Added: Review Of 7/21/05 Each year at GrassRoots, Donna the Buffalo's Thursday night performance is held in high esteem as festival-goers get their first taste of the host band, and the relatively small crowd gives the night a more intimate feel than those that follow it. My review of Donna's 7/21/05 set at GrassRoots in Trumansburg, NY might give you some idea of what it is like, but trust me--there's truly no substitute for being there. Coming next are Greg Cotterill's photos of Donna's Friday afternoon set with the always-photogenic Jim Lauderdale, so stay tuned. (posted 7/27/05)

GrassRoots Photos, Part One Greg Cotterill, who provided DonnaFans.com with photos of last year's GrassRoots Festival, made the most of his backstage access to capture some unique shots of Donna the Buffalo at GrassRoots this year. Check out a half-dozen of his shots of the band's set on the Infield Stage on Saturday, 7/23/05. Greg's also generously provided me with three times as many shots of the band's Friday afternoon performance with Jim Lauderdale, and some of Jeb on fiddle with the Bubba George String Band on Sunday, all of which will be posted on this site by the end of the week. Thanks so much, Greg! (posted 7/26/05)

GrassRoots '05: Too Awesome For Words On Sunday, 7/24, Donna the Buffalo wrapped up the GrassRoots Festival in Trumansburg, NY with its traditional all-star marathon jam that featured many of their friends rotating on and off the stage throughout the set, including Keith Frank, Dimitri Thomas, Jennie Stearns, Amy Glicklich, John Specker, Crow Greenspun, Sim Redmond, Kevin Wimmer, Keith Secola, and others. This set was only the last in a long series of highlights from the four-day event. Reviews and photos of much of Donna the Buffalo's performances at this festival will be on DonnaFans.com within the next few days. In the meantime, you can find the setlists at Donnabase.com, and check out the Ithaca Journal's coverage at www.theithacajournal.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20050725/NEWS01/507250317/1002. And if you've got photos or a review of Donna from GrassRoots that you'd like to see on this site, I'd love to see 'em: fans@donnafans.com. (posted 7/25/05)

Life's A Ride Hits #1 On The Charts! On Sunday, 7/17, Donna the Buffalo's latest release, Life's A Ride, reached #1 on XM Satellite radio's X Country chart. Previously, the CD had hit #16 on the Americana Radio chart. Congratulations to the band and everyone involved with Life's A Ride. (posted 7/19/05)

Currently, two shows are available: 5/13/05, Bowery Ballroom, New York, NY; and 5/14/05, The Funk Box, Baltimore, MD. The next show scheduled to be released this way is 6/12/05, Bonnaroo Music Festival, Manchester, TN. In addition, most of the band's studio releases are available as MP3 files for $9, and the rare, early White Tape and Red Tape for $8 each in MP3. (posted 7/19/05)

Just Added: Albany Photos, Review Donna the Buffalo has played many a strange gig in their long and storied career, but under a overpass in the pouring rain for free has got to rate as one of the strangest. Fortunately, the band has a strong following in the Capital City, and the one-hour show was a blast. Despite the conditions, I shot a dozen photos of Donna's 7/14/05 show in Albany, NY, and I try to give you a taste of what it was like being there in my modest review. (posted 7/18/05)

Great Photos From Great Blue Heron DonnaFans.com contributor Michelle Chylinski has kindly provided me with yet another fantastic addition to this site: 36 high-quality photos from the Great Blue Heron festival 7/9 - 7/10, including shots of the band's Saturday night set; Jeb and Kathy at Sunday morning's Songwriter's Circle; the Sunday afternoon performance by Buffalo Zydeco; and DtB's Sunday night performance, which included Red Stick Rambler Kevin Winner joining in on fiddle for Oh Ma. And these are just some of Michelle's photos from GBH. For more of her photography of this and other Donna shows, check out her site at www.michellethecookielady.com/donnashows/. Thanks a million, Michelle! (posted 7/16/05)

From Under A Bridge In Albany On Thursday, 7/14, Donna the Buffalo played a free 5 p.m. show in Albany, NY, opening up for Sam Bush as part of the city's "Alive at Five" concert series. Unfortunately, because the weather forecast called for (and delivered) rain, the show was moved from a local park to the "rain location," which had the stage set up below an overpass of Route 787. Despite an abundance of concrete and pavement, the rain location served us well: Both band and Herd stayed mostly dry as Donna delivered a short (1 hour) but energetic set that was loaded with fan favorites, including a roaring Funkyside/Blue Sky/Way Back When triple play to end the night. Look for about a dozen photos and a review of this show on DonnaFans.com shortly. (posted 7/15/05)

Coming Next: Photos From Great Blue Heron Michelle Chylinski was kind enough to share with DonnaFans.com photos of all of Donna the Buffalo's performances at last weekend's Great Blue Heron Fest in Sherman, NY, including the band's Saturday night set, Buffalo Zydeco, Jeb and Kathy Z at the Songwriter's Circle, and the Sunday set with special guest Kevin Wimmer of the Red Stick Ramblers on fiddle. Michelle captured everything that Donna did at this fest, including Bill laying down while he played during Sunday's set. I hope to have dozens of Michelle's photos on this site within the next few days, so check back often. (posted 7/13/05)

Four New Songs Debuted At GBH On Sunday, 7/10, during their set on the Main Stage at the Great Blue Heron Festival in Sherman, NY, Donna the Buffalo performed four songs for the first time ever. Doug Baker was videotaping the set, and so he kindly took a stab at some working titles for the four tunes: The Place That Lovers Do (Jeb song), One Day At A Time (Tara song), Diamond In The Rough (Tara song), and When It's Meant To Be (Jeb song performed solo). 'Cause Zydeco's Just More Fun When You're Wearing A Silly Hat Sometimes it's cool to see how much the band has--and hasn't--changed over the past few years. Brian Reid, the person whose photos got DonnaFans.com started in the first place, shares a handful of photos he shot of DtB and Zydeco Experiment in 2002 at the GrassRoots Festival in Trumansburg, NY. Thanks for the memories, Brian, and keep 'em coming. (posted 7/7/05)

Celebrating Independence at Nelson Ledges On Saturday, 7/2, Donna the Buffalo returned to Nelson Ledges Quarry Park in Garrettsville, OH for a single afternoon performance. Gail Vanderheyden's photos of this set show the band laying it down in NLQP's beautiful surroundings. No recordings of this show have surfaced yet. Thanks for the photos, Gail! (posted 7/6/05)

Get Ready For Great Blue Heron After a swing out to Wisconsin on Thursday, 7/7, for Milwaukee's Summerfest, Donna the Buffalo will head to Sherman, NY for the annual Great Blue Heron Fest from 7/8 to 7/10. In addition to plenty of Donna, this fest will also feature two sets of Zydeco Experiment--Donna the Buffalo's Zydeco alter ego that consists of members of DtB and a rotating cast of friends. This year, Zydeco Experiment (which for some reason is listed as Buffalo Zydeco on the GBH schedule) will play both all night Friday night and a special set on Sunday afternoon. To get in the mood, check out Michelle Chylinski's photos of Donna and Zydeco Experiment from last year's GBH. (posted 7/2/05)
