Donna the Buffalo News & Rumors

June 2005

Donna & Lauderdale From Groots '04 With the summer festival season in full swing, fans everywhere are gearing up for their favorite. For many, that means the Finger Lakes GrassRoots Festival in the band's home base, Trumansburg, NY; this year it takes place July 21 - 24. Every year, one of the highlights of this festival is the set Donna plays with longtime friend Jim Lauderdale. Thanks to Greg Cotterill, you can check out a handful of excellent photos of the "Jonna the Bufferdale" set at last year's GrassRoots on 7/25/04. Thanks for the photos, Greg, and I'll see you at the Fairgrounds! (posted 6/27/05)

Donna Will Play On Martha's Vineyard On Wednesday, July 13, Donna the Buffalo will perform at Hot Tin Roof on Martha's Vineyard, MA. This will be the first time that the band has ever played Martha's Vineyard, though they did do shows on Nantucket in 1996 and 1997. If you're planning on going, leave your car on the mainland, make your ferry and lodging reservations today, and if you're bringing your camera, don't forget your friends at DonnaFans.com ;> (posted 6/27/05)

Wonderful Wakarusa From the festival with the funniest name--Wakarusa--DonnaFans.com brings you photos of the band's 6/18 and 6/19 performances in Lawrence, KS, courtesy of Mike E. and Daniel Sanda. These two snagged plenty of great close-ups, and it looks like the band enjoyed every minute of these two gigs. Thanks for the photos, guys! (posted 6/23/05)

Greetings From Indiana Donna the Buffalo have played in the state of Indiana only a handful of times over the years, but one of them was quite recently--6/16/05 at the Foellinger Theatre in Ft. Wayne. Fortunately for us, Bruce Lehman was on hand to take a photo of this rare gig; you can check out a much larger version of the photo here. Bruce reports that the show was a wonderful time, and it also raised money for two local nonprofit organizations. Thanks for the photo, Bruce! (posted 6/22/05)

Jeb Debuts A New Song In Chicago At Donna the Buffalo's concert last night (Friday, 6/17/05) at Martyr's in Chicago, Jeb Puryear ended the show with a four-song solo acoustic set that included the first-ever performance of one of his songs. After the band did Tides of Time, Jeb stayed on to play Husbands & Wives, then debuted a song called I Find Myself Lost In Your Arms, followed by 40 Days & 40 Nights and then closed with Like the Coming Sun, which according to Donnabase.com hadn't been played since last October. Thanks, Gary, for the info. (posted 6/18/05)

Just Added: Photos From Pittsburgh 6/14/05 Previously, Michelle Chylinski had contributed to DonnaFans.com her photos of Donna the Buffalo's 2004 concerts at Great Blue Heron and at Erie, PA. Today she's given me permission to post her photos of the band's 6/14/05 set at the Three Rivers Arts Festival in Pittsburgh, PA, a mere two days after the show. Among other things, her images show Tara to be looking splendid in her green Donna the Buffalo T-shirt. Thanks, Michelle, not only for use of the photos, but also for getting them to me so quickly! NY Radio Station to Air Donna's 6/2 Show On Tuesday, 6/21, at 9 p.m. EST, WEOS-FM, a non-commercial, public radio station licensed to Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, NY, will broadcast a recording of Donna the Buffalo's 6/2/05 concert at the State Theater in Ithaca, NY. WEOS can be heard in central and western New York on 89.7 FM, 90.3 FM and 88.1 FM, and the station broadcasts over the Internet at www.weos.org/live.html www.weos.org/live.html. Thanks to WEOS' Greg Cotterill for making this broadcast happen. (posted 6/15/05)

Happy Birthday Jeb! Jeb Puryear turns 39 today, Wednesday, 6/15. He'll celebrate with a well-earned day off as the band travels from last night's gig in Pittsburgh to tomorrow's in Fort Wayne, IN. Have a good one, Jeb! (posted 6/15/05)

Just Added: Photos From Isle Of Palms, SC This morning I've added 18 of first-time DonnaFans.com contributor Zan Buckner's photos of Donna the Buffalo's performances on 6/10/05 and 6/11/05 at the Windjammer in Isle of Palms, SC. Her images include several great close-ups of Kathy Z, plus two of Tara taking a page (literally) from Linda Discus' lyrics book, affectionately known as the Hymnal, for help on Faith to Believe on Saturday 6/11/05. Thanks for the photos, Zan! (posted 6/14/05)

GrassRoots Schedule Is Released!! The schedule of events for the Finger Lakes GrassRoots Festival of Music & Dance, which will take place in Trumansburg, NY 7/21/05 - 7/24/05, has been announced; you'll find it at www.grassrootsfest.org/Trumansburg/schedule.cfm. Donna the Buffalo will perform at 11:30 p.m. on Thursday; with Jim Lauderdale at 5:30 p.m. on Friday; as Zydeco Experiment with Preston Frank at midnight on Friday; at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday; and at 8:15 p.m. on Sunday in a set that's billed as Donna the Buffalo and Friends. And that, believe or not, is merely the tip of the iceberg as far as what Groots has to offer. Don't miss it. (posted 6/14/05)

Donna Breaks Out Rare Tunes In SC At last weekend's two-night run at the Windjammer in Isle of Palms, SC, Donna the Buffalo performed several songs they hadn't played in quite some time, and some they've hardly ever played. On Friday night, 6/10/05, Jeb finished off the encore by himself by playing Love Is The Only Thing, last played 9/20/03, and then Impossible, a sung he wrote but most likely had never played during a Donna the Buffalo performance before this night (he's played it at Songwriter's Circles at some festivals). On Saturday, it was back into the songbook for Do You Remember, a song off The Red Tape last performed live on 6/21/01. The sad part: Apparently no one recorded these shows. I'll have some of Zan Buckner's photos from these two gigs posted soon. (posted 6/13/05)

Just Added: Ithaca Review, Better Photos Call it the coverage that never ends: I've posted a review of Donna the Buffalo's performances at the parade and the State Theater on 6/2/05 in Ithaca, NY, plus thanks to new DonnaFans.com contributor Brendon Layton, I've added eight photos of the band playing at the Theater that night that are much better than the ones I shot. Thanks, Brandon! (posted 6/11/05)

Short DtB Interview in SC Newspaper On Wednesday, 6/8, the Charleston (SC) City Paper published a preview of Donna the Buffalo's upcoming shows at the Windjammer in Isle of Palms, SC. The article contained a brief interview with Jeb and Tara in which they had some interesting things to say about the band's revised lineup, building and recording in their own studio, and Jeb's take of the current presidential administration, and how it's expressed in the song Deeds of a Few. You can read it at http://charlestoncitypaper.com/layout.asp?id=44924&action=detail&catID=8457&parentID=8457. (posted 6/9/05)

Nine Shows In 11 Days...Yikes! Tonight, 6/9, in Wilmington, NC, Donna the Buffalo begins a string of performances that will have them playing nine shows in seven cities in 11 days--don't even think about how many miles. After Wilmington, the band moves down to Isle of Palms, SC for a two-night stand at The Windjammer that rumour has it might be webcast live. Next it will be a Sunday afternoon slot at the biggest of the big festivals, Bonnaroo, in Manchester, TN that will be broadcast on local and satellite radio. After a day off, they'll play at the Three Rivers Arts Fest in Pittsburgh on Tuesday, 6/14, then another day off followed by a benefit concert at the Foellinger Theater in Fort Wayne, IN on Thursday. After what's billed as an early show at Martyrs in Chicago on Friday, 6/17, the band finishes off the run with a two-day stint 6/18 and 6/19 at the Wakarusa Music Festival in Lawrence, KS. (posted 6/9/05)

Ithaca Photos Pages Have Been Fixed Some of the pages with my photos of Donna the Buffalo's performances on 6/2/05 at the Ithaca Festival Parade and then at the State Theatre had some broken links and duplicated images, but they're all fixed now. Let me know what you think, and I'll be adding my review of those shows soon. (posted 6/7/05)

Michigan Photos Part III I've just added the last of the third batch of Jessica Little's photos of Donna the Buffalo's three gigs in Michigan over Memorial Day Weekend. If you see Jessica, thank her for sharing her shots of the band's 5/26/05 show in Southgate, MI, where Donna played at The Modern Exchange, a vintage clothing store that also features live music, 5/27/05 from The Intersection in Grand Rapids, MI, and 5/29/05, The Holiday Inn, Traverse City, MI. (updated 6/7/05)

Dancin' In The Streets Of Ithaca On Thursday 6/2/05, Donna the Buffalo performed on the Grassroots float in the Ithaca Festival Parade. The float consisted of two flatbed trailers that served as stages: one for the band, and one filled with dancers. The band played several songs, including Part-Time Lover and of course Big Parade, as the Herd trailed them along the route. Later that night, they did a 2.5-hour set at the State Theatre. Check out my photos of both performances, and I'll write and post a review soon. (posted 6/3/05)

Odd Pairing At Ithaca Festival Gig The opening act for Donna the Buffalo's CD release party for Life's A Ride at the State Theatre on 6/2/05 will be Kievan Rus, an all-girl Ithaca-based punk/pop/rock band that recently appeared in a Coke commercial. If you're going to be at this show, come out early and support this part of the Ithaca music scene. Donna will also have a float in the Ithaca parade that takes place immediately before this show. Look for photos of all the action on DonnaFans.com within a few days of the festival. It's bound to be an interesting evening... (updated 6/1/05)
