Donna the Buffalo News & Rumors

May 2005

Photo Flashback: Erie, PA 11/20/04 With Donna the Buffalo off for a few days and no photos of the recent MI shows to post, I dug into the archive and pulled out some great stuff from last year. Michelle Chylinski recently shared some of her photos of the band from 2004, and today I posted her photos from the band's 11/20/04 performance at Forward Hall in Erie, PA. (Nice shirt, Bill!) These are in addition to Jessica Little's dozen photos of that show I'd posted earlier. Thanks again, Michelle! (posted 5/30/05)

Memorial Day Weekend in MI (Mostly) On Thursday, 5/26/05, Donna the Buffalo kicks off a four-night Memorial Day weekend run with three nights in Michigan and one in Illinois. The band will start the weekend with a show at The Modern Exchange in Southgate, MI on Thursday, followed on Friday by a 5:30 p.m. slot at Summer Camp 2005 in Chillicothe, IL. Saturday, the band returns to The Intersection in Grand Rapids, MI (check out photos from the band's gig there from last November), and finishes the weekend on Sunday with a Blissfest Warmup party at the esteemed Holiday Inn in Travis City, MI. It's about time the MI Herd got a mini run of home state shows--Donna played MI only twice in all of 2004! (posted 5/26/05)

Just Added: Review Of 5/12/05, New Haven, CT In his own inimitable style, David Grace offers DonnaFans.com another review of a Donna the Buffalo concert. This time it's of his birthday show: 5/12/05 at Toad's Place in New Haven, CT, where the band honored his birthday request by playing Hit The Groove for the first time since last July. Thanks again, David, and I'll see ya in Ithaca! (posted 5/26/05)

Jeb Appears On Ithaca Radio Station On Sunday, 5/22/05, Jeb Puryear was interviewed by WVBR 93.5 FM in Ithaca, NY. He also performed Seems to Want To Hurt This Time, Killing A Man, and The Call on acoustic guitar. You can download MP3s of both the interview and the performance by following the Search for MP3 link on Donnabase.com. (posted 5/23/05)

Which Life's A Ride Song Do You Want To Hear On The Radio? Donna the Buffalo's new CD, Life's A Ride, is currently at #27 on the Americana Music Association's Americana Airplay chart, which represents the previous week's album airplay reported from radio stations that submit weekly spin counts. This is up from #37 last week. You can help the band continue to climb the charts by contacting your favorite station and requesting they play the new CD. Vote for which song from Life's A Ride you feel should be played on radio--and see which songs other fans have voted for--by taking the lastest DonnaFans.com poll. (updated 5/23/05)

Ithaca Newspaper Interviews Kathy Z On Thursday, 5/19/05, the Ithaca Journal ran an interview with Donna the Buffalo keyboardist Kathy Ziegler, which you can read at www.theithacajournal.com
/entertainment/stories/20050519/
music/2138818.html.
Kathy talks about her new CD, Don't Worry, The Danger..., her musical upbringing, and what it's like to play and tour with Donna the Buffalo. Lovin' Life At The LEAF On Sunday, 5/15/05, Donna the Buffalo played its fourth concert in as many nights. John Yust took photos of the band's performance at the LEAF (Lake Eden Arts Festival) in Black Mountain, NC, including multiple shots of Bill having the time of his life, and two of Lydia Garrison of Turtle Island Dream sitting in on scrubboard. Thanks as always, John, for use of your photos. (posted 5/18/05)

Why Donna Keeps On Being Donna Plenty has been written about how Jim Miller's departure has affected Donna the Buffalo, but no one's put the band's various personnel changes into a long-term perspective as Barbara L. Walker has. Her analysis of the "transformed" band, which she wrote soon after seeing the 5/14/05 show in Baltimore, explains how the lineup changes have--and have not--affected the music. Memories From Great Blue Heron 2004 With a short break in the band's relentless touring schedule, I figured I'd take a minute to post some photos of earlier shows that have been sitting on my hard drive. The first batch is from Michelle Chylinski, who shot Donna the Buffalo's performances on 7/10/04 and 7/11/04 at Great Blue Heron Festival in Sherman, NY. Michelle got some fanstastic pictures, including Richie Stearns joining the band on Saturday, Jeb playing bass with Zydeco Experiment, and one of Jeb and Kathy on acoustic guitars for Sunday's Songwriter's Circle. Thanks for allowing DonnaFans.com to use your photos, Michelle! (updated 5/15/05)

Good Times In NYC Donna the Buffalo performed an energetic, almost 2.5-hour set to an appreciative crowd at the Bowery Ballroom in New York on Friday, 5/13/05, and as has been the case recently, bassist Bill Reynolds pleased both crowd and band alike with his singing (on Part-Timer Lover) and antics. While I didn't take any photos, you can check out my somewhat long-winded review of this show. (posted 5/14/05)

Photos From FL, Part II Florida resident Phil Ross is a big fan of both Donna the Buffalo and DonnaFans.com, and so he's letting me post 12 photos he shot of the band's 5/4/05 and 5/5/05 shows at The Social in Orlando. Phil also captured a few images from the 5/6/05 show in St. Petersburg, including several nice pics of Kathy and one of the Herd's Most Famous Cellphone. Enjoy! And thanks, Phil, hope to meet you on tour this summer. (updated 5/12/05)

Photos From FL, Part I Donna the Buffalo just wrapped up a five-night run in Florida that included a night in Jacksonville Beach and two nights each in Orlando and St. Petersburg, and DonnaFans.com has photos of all of it. Contributing to this site for the first time, Linda Phifer shares a dozen images of the 5/3/05 show at the Freebird Cafe in Jacksonville Beach. Thanks, Linda! Phil Ross took photos of the rest of the Florida run, and I'll add them to this site soon. (posted 5/9/05)

Donna Returns To NYC A mere four days after the last of the recent string of Florida shows, Donna the Buffalo will start a four-cities-in-four-night run. It starts on Thursday, 5/12 in New Haven, CT, then returns to the band's favorite New York City venue, The Bowery, on Friday 5/13 (if you're planning to go, get tickets today--this show will sell out), before moving on to Baltimore and down to Black Mountain, NC for the LEAF Festival. After that, the band will take a well-earned nine-day break before embarking on a Memorial Day Weekend trip to MI and IL. (posted 5/9/05)

Donna And Friends At Merlefest Donna the Buffalo performed three times at Merlefest in Wilkesboro, NC, and Terry Killebrew shot photos of the band's performance with Jim Lauderdale, Joe Thrift, and several other guests on Sunday, 5/1/05. Terry was also wise enough to catch a very rare Merlefest performance by Tara Nevins & Friends earlier that day, and shares his photos of that as well. Nice work, Terry. (posted 5/7/05)

Hear Donna's Performance At WNCW On Monday, 5/2/05, Donna the Buffalo performed live in Studio B at WNCW 88.7 FM in Spindale, NC. The band played Way Back When, I Don't Need A Riddle, Killing A Man, Blue Sky, Rockin' Horse, and Life's A Ride. You can download MP3s of this performance and interview from Donnabase.com at ftp://209.94.123.199/Audio/Donna/20050502/. (updated 5/5/05)

Special Guests At Shakori John Yust has got a knack for being in the right place at the right time with a camera in hand, as evidenced by his photos from the recent Shakori GrassRoots Festival. From Thursday's Zydeco Experiment to Sunday's all-star set that featured Donna with friends Keith Secola, John Specker, and Mr. Preston Frank, John caught in pixels everything Donna did at this festival. And don't forget Terry Killebrew's photos of Donna's performance on Saturday at Shakori, which I added to this site last week. Thank you, gentlemen, for taking the time to shoot and share these photos. (updated 5/3/05)
