6/20/09 Mountain Aid, Silk Hope, NC

Donna the Buffalo has a longstanding history of playing gigs to benefit a worthy cause. The latest of these was Mountain Aid, which took place 6/19 - 6/20 at the Shakori Hills Grassroots Festival Farm and raised funds for the Pennies of Promise campaign to build a new school for the children of Marsh Fork Elementary in Raleigh County, WV, which sits in the shadow of a Mountain Top Removal coal mine, just 225 feet from the coal silo and 400 yards downstream from a leaking dam holding back nearly three billion gallons of toxic sludge. The band's set at this show included In This Life, It's Love Time, I'll Be Gone, Funky Side, the new Tara Zydeco song, and Magic of Love. For the encore, DtB did Walk the Way the Wind Blows with Grammy-winning singer Kathy Mattea, who hosted the festival, and then ended the night with a rousing version of Seems to Want to Hurt This Time. Kelly Farkas attended Mountain Aid, and generously provides us with 16 photos of Donna the Buffalo performing in Silk Hope, NC on 6/20/09. Kelly's images include many fantastic portrait-style shots, and one of the band with Mattera. Thanks for the photos, Kelly!

6/13/09 Niagara Falls, NY

Donna the Buffalo resumed its tour by performing at the Centennial Stage at the Hard Rock Cafe in Niagara Falls, NY. This show was part of the Centennial Celebration of the The Boundary Waters Treaty of 1909, which created the independent International Joint Commission (IJC) to prevent and resolve boundary waters disputes between Canada and the United States. In addition to favorite tunes like Family Picture, Conscious Evolution, and Arrows Pointing Sideways, this show included the band's first-ever performance of the Star Spangled Banner. Gene Martin explains: "They shot off fireworks before Donna's set was finished so there was some confusion if they should stop playing until the fireworks were done or to play one. So while discussing it, Jeb started singing the Star Spangled Banner and the rest of the band and then the crowd joined in, too. A special Jeb moment." Frequent DonnaFans.com contributor Karen Landau was on hand, and provides us with 5 photos of DtB playing on 6/13/09 in Niagara Falls, NY. Thanks for the photos, Karen!

The recent tour by Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann's trio, BK3, with special guest Tara Nevins has created quite a buzz, with a certain contingent of DtB fans especially excited at the prospect of Tara singing and playing on songs made famous by the Grateful Dead. DonnaFans.com contributor Mike Poole was at this show and kindly shares with us 12 photos of Tara performing with BK3 on 6/5/09 at the Music Farm in Charleston, SC. The band's two-set performance on this next-to-last date of the eastern leg of the tour included versions of the Dead's Alabama Getaway, Peggy-O, China Cat Sunflower, Franklin's Tower, He's Gone, Scarlet Begonias, and Bertha, as well as the Max Creek song Chains of Life and the Nevins composition If You Only Could. You can check out Tara absolutely tearing it up on fiddle during the band's peformance of Franklin's Tower at this show on YouTube at www.youtube.com/watch?v=cL6CIiwI5Qw. DonnaFans.com contributor John Yust also attended this show, and said, "The whole show was every bit as good as what people have been posting." If you weren't at one of these gigs, you still might be able to catch Tara performing with BK3--thought Tara's time with the band is officially over, rumor has it that she may sit in with Kreutzmann's trio for a song or two when both BK3 and Donna the Buffalo perform at the All Good Festival in Masontown, WV on 7/12. Thanks for the photos, Mike! (posted 6/10/09)
